FINAL MASTER PLAN

CONCEPT

CHAIN REACTION

This Master Plan establishes guidelines for the creation of a network of public spaces along the creek.

The Plan aims to use small-scale improvements to catalyze chain reactions throughout Poughkeepsie’s neighborhoods and the Fall Kill watershed.  This can cause ripple effects benefiting city residents, biodiversity, and water quality as mutually beneficial systems. Continue Reading →

HANDBOOK

A HANDBOOK PROMPTS ACTION OVER TIME

The Fall Kill Plan will be issued as a handbook that will guide a broad range of Fall Kill stakeholders to take part in revitalizing the creek.  The handbook approach offers a way to build up to large scale impacts by involving multiple types of stakeholders, one at a time.  Larger projects can also be phased over time to respond to funding as it arises. PILOT SITES

Designs for 3 pilot sites are shown here to imagine how the creek can be activated, and to invite feedback and discussion among city residents about their potential.  These design ideas are also applicable to spaces throughout the Fall Kill watershed.  Other sites can also be developed in addition to, or instead of these pilot sites. PILOT SITE #1: VERRAZANO BOULEVARD

Verrazano Boulevard between Mill and Washington Streets offers an opportunity to create public access to the creek along a linear park.  This site can connect the Poughkeepsie Train Station to the Walkway Loop Trail, draw people to the Mt. Carmel business area, and link residents in surrounding areas through active recreational spaces. Continue Reading →

PILOT SITE #2: MALCOLM X

Malcolm-X Park, located on the East side of the creek at Mansion Street, and between S.F.B. Morse Young Child Magnet School (K-5) and Beulah Baptist Church, offers an extraordinary opportunity to create a neighborhood playground for residents of all ages alongside a significant wetland habitat.  The Site can activate partnerships with the school and church as well as other after-school programs and other community support organizations. PILOT SITE #3: CROSSROADS

(MILL, MAIN AND CLINTON STREETS)

At the intersection of Mill, Main and Clinton Streets lies a parking lot built over the Fall Kill Creek.  This site offers an extraordinary opportunity to a public space that can activate the Middle Main district, and connect it to the institutions (including the Family Partnership Center and Ebeneezer Baptist Church) and residences along Clinton.  This is the site at which the creek comes closest to Main Street.

USES RESEARCH

HOW CAN THE FALL KILL BE USED?

The Fall Kill currently functions a neglected dumping ground, but it is also a hidden gem to school groups and environmental advocates.  Future uses of the creek can foster lively recreational uses and support the daily life of city residents.  Improvements to the creek can connect to pathways of movement through the city and provide needed public spaces in adjacent neighborhoods.  Continue Reading →

NEIGHBORHOODS RESEARCH

HOW CAN THE FALL KILL STRENGTHEN COMMUNITIES?

Few Poughkeepsie residents consider themselves members of a neighborhood.  We aim to connect the disjointed communities of Poughkeepsie by forming partnerships with the city’s many communities organizations.  Neighborhood centers along the Fall Kill can help activate a vibrant and safe social environment, while helping to create a sense of identity, ownership, and collective interest.
